Quality & Value As Standard at Farlows

Quality and value come as standard with every product you purchase from Farlows. Always have done, always will do. For over 180 years, our brand has been built on trust, the knowledge that we only sell products that are high quality and that we charge a fair, honest price for them. Benjamin Franklin, one of America's most influential Founding Fathers, remarked that:

“The bitterness of poor quality remains long after the sweetness of low price is forgotten.”

It’s why we choose to use only the best materials and most skilled craftspeople for our Farlows own brand products. And it’s why we also take great care over the finer details.

Take our best-selling Litchfield fieldcoat. Made from the finest 100% wool tweed designed in-house and woven and finished exclusively for Farlows by Lovat Mill, in Hawick, Scottish Borders, washed in waters from the River Tweed and given a hard-pressed finish for added durability. This fabric is sent to our master coatmakers in Northamptonshire, where it’s marked, cut and sewn by hand, with rigorous quality control done by people, not machines.

Its features are meticulously designed for performance, such as its half raglan / half set-in sleeve with action back or its woollen storm cuffs. Little things like the rubberised silent snaps to avoid damaging gunstocks, the Alcantara hard-wearing trim in high wear areas, the military twill luxurious lining with heavy weave cotton lower drip strip, these are the finer details that we care about.

The Best Materials & Craftspeople

Selecting only the finest materials and craftspeople to work with is a choice we make over many alternatives, for example;

  • We choose to use only the finest English bridle leather that’s ethically and sustainably sourced with traceability back to the farm it was from, and tanned using 100% vegetable tans.
  • We choose to handcraft our leather products in a small workshop in Staffordshire.
  • We choose to use 100% organic ripstop cotton grown without synthetic fertilisers or toxic pesticides and using sustainable methods for our wading jacket, and we make it in Britain.
  • We choose to use lead-free pewter in our hipflasks and not make them abroad.
  • We choose to support small family run independent British businesses, investing in long lasting relationships with them to ensure we’re always striving to improve quality and minimise any adverse impact on the environment.

This is what quality means to us. Such quality does not come cheap. But it doesn’t necessarily have to cost you the earth either. We strive to keep our prices as accessible as we can on our own brand products by keeping our margins tight. We feel our prices are a fair reflection of the time, skill and materials involved to craft them. You can choose to buy cheaper or more expensive, but we believe you won’t find better quality anywhere else for the price. As Warren Buffet famously said:

“Price is what you pay. Value is what you get.”

Buy cheap, buy twice.

Quality and value as standard extends beyond our Farlows own brand products too. We choose to sell only the brands that meet our high demands. While we sell products at RRP, some are more expensive than others. You can buy a fly fishing rod from us for under £80 and you can buy one from us for over £1,000. Both products are excellent quality (the more expensive one won’t necessarily catch you more fish either).

We don’t stock what we wouldn’t use ourselves (we will discontinue selling some brands if we feel their products no longer align with our values). Speaking of which, you’ll also find quality and value in our customer service and the expert advice from our Farlows in-store team, whether that’s what products are right for your needs or tips & techniques to up your game (plus industry leading blogs, tackle & species guides, and casting videos right here on the website).

We are proud to be a British brand with a long heritage, proud to actively support the environmental charities we believe in (Wild Trout Trust, Angling Trust, Atlantic Salmon Trust, Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust, South East Rivers Trust), proud to hold a Royal Warrant from H.M. King Charles III, proud that we are a Planet Mark Certified Business (we’ve reduced our carbon footprint by 40% since 2022). But perhaps what we are most proud of is the trust we have built with our customers from the reassurance they get knowing that quality and value will always come as standard. That’s our DNA.
