Combining his love of travel with his favourite pastime, Duncan Hall has fished in over 30 countries. Making his own connections with fishermen and guides across the world, and organising the trips himself, he has been able to fish some of the worlds finest rivers for a fraction of the price of commercial trips.
Duncan Hall, describes fishing trips for dorado, tigerfish, bonefish, huchen, and peacock bass, as well as trout and salmon in Bulgaria, Ireland, British Columbia, Newfoundland, Slovenia, Alaska, Iceland, Tasmania, Russia, Patagonia, New Zealand and Norway.
Duncan Hall has been hooked on fishing since landing his first trout as a six-year-old. This early success developed into a lifelong passion for fly fishing, which has provided many years of much-needed relaxation and tranquility over his long career as a full time General Practioner.
Duncan honed his skills, not just as a fly fisherman, but also as a fly-tyer at home in Devon. He was privileged to have been taught by Jim Nice, a recognised fly tying master.
I thoroughly recommend this book . It is very different from most fishing books as it is more of a travelogue. The pictures that help to illustrate the story lines are stunning . This is not a “how to” book but it does show what can be achieved through thorough research and planning .
I have been fortunate enough to be included on some of Duncan’s trips and have great memories of them .
I can thoroughly recommend this book . It takes you to many places in the world you may think are inaccessible due to cost.
With painstaking research and meticulous planning Duncan has shown that it is possible to fish the world on a shoestring . Having been on many trips with Duncan, including the first one to Finmark , I can vouch for the success of his planning methods .
This book is not a “how to” style of angling book but more a travelogue illustrated by some fantastic photographs and some cracking fishing stories.
This would make a great present for anyone with a love of the outdoors.
Fantastic piscatorial travel, excitement and experience.

Duncan Hall is a fanatical angler who has taken his piscatorial obsession to extraordinary lengths. Travelling with his rod to some of the world’s most inaccessible and beautiful places to tangle with the most incredible fish, Duncan’s book now allows you, the reader, to share his excitement and experience. It’s almost as good as being there!
What a fabulous antidote to Lockdown. I read this in the summer of 2020, when all routes to escapism appeared to be blocked.
To be transported to far away climes, so effectively, by this author was just what I needed.
From Alaska, Canada and Iceland in the north, through Europe, the Americas, and down to Tasmania, Fly-fishing on a shoestring covers the globe.
I became interested in the book after I heard Duncan Hall speak on my local radio station. I wasn’t expecting to be so captivated by his narrative. I am not a fisherman, but after listening to him, I started to wonder if I should be. He made it clear that the catching of fish was only a small part of the experience, and that the preparation, anticipation, and then, the enjoyment of the environment and the interesting characters he met through his sport were the real richness of the fishing experience.
Persuaded to buy his book, I can vouch for the quality of the photos, which, combined with the vivid descriptions of the native people, and the history of the areas made this an unexpected page turner for me.
In summary, Well written, beautifully illustrated and an enjoyable read. The timing of the radio presentation unfortunately missed a Christmas gift opportunity, but maybe the pandemic was responsible for this one. Family members with summer birthdays were delighted to receive it.
For someone who knows little about fly fishing I found the book captivating having been drawn into turning each page wanting more from this refreshingly different collection of very personal accounts of a specialist interest. Dr. Hall clearly enjoys more than just the instant his line goes tight as explained by his storytelling and professional photography. I’m thrilled to have been educated!
