The cotton used for the Cheltenham has a unique characteristic; as the cotton fibres get wet, they swell. This swelling of the fibres then acts as a barrier, which in turn keeps the rain out. This technology was first created during the second world war, for use in the pilots flight suits. It was designed to help increase the chance of survival for when they had to ditch into the sea. It is still produced and used today due to its effectiveness.
