World Ocean Day falls annually on June 8th and acts as a reminder of the crucial role the oceans play in our lives and the urgent need to address the various challenges they face.
Did you know there’s a direct connection between a healthy ocean and a stable climate? Stand with us so we can ensure a safe, sustainable, and equitable future by protecting our blue planet.
Here at Farlows, we understand the importance of protecting our blue spaces and the species that live within them. As part of this, for many years we’ve been actively supporting the vital work of a number of charities, including the Atlantic Salmon Trust and Angling Trust.
For saltwater fly anglers in particular, our ocean is incredibly important. Here in the UK, sea fishing is completely free, you don’t require a rod licence to fish in it, making this area of the sport highly accessible.
We also work with a number of anglers who are passionate about sea fishing, including Level 2 Angling Coach and fly tyer Jo Stephenson, avid bass angler Connie Woolsey and saltwater fly angling expert Peter McLeod (from Aardvark McLeod). Much of Jo’s fishing is done in tropical climes while Connie enjoys fishing off the UK coast.
Jo said;
"I feel lucky to have experienced so many different ways of fishing in the ocean. From the cold, clear waters of Norwegian fjords to ferocious breakers in South Africa and the flats of Kiribati. Fishing in the ocean, I’ve had moments of feeling free and exhilarated, and also lonely and small (when being left on an island and the boat couldn’t see me… but I could see it)! It has given me joy and but has also broken me, and I’ll never be in control of that!"
Connie said;
“Fishing is the best reason for me to spend time at the beach. The power of a lure caught species, dashing through the waves and current, making even ‘smaller’ fish feel like you’re hooked into ‘Jaws’. Raw excitement, in contrast to the otherwise tranquil surroundings and serenity the beach can offer. I can’t think of many places I’d rather be.”
Peter said;
“I have fished some 30 saltwater operations in 12 countries and there’s something utterly primal about tropical saltwater fly fishing. It’s sight fishing at its purest—just you, the fish, and the moment. Every cast is a test, every take an explosion of adrenaline and the raw power of these fish in shallow water is addictive. It’s not just fishing—it’s hunting with a fly rod.”

Sadly, in recent years the seas have become a dumping ground for waste products and increasing numbers of very small pieces of plastic materials (microplastics) have been found.
This has encouraged brands such as Patagonia, Fishpond, YETI and many others to start to reuse and recycle products sustainably and we are very proud to stock a number of products that are sustainable including:
