Big Blue for Farlows’ Ben

Farlows' store assistant and lure / sea fishing expert Ben Tregoning put his considerable expertise to good use in a recent trip out from Penzance with Specialised Charters in his home county of Cornwall when he connected with a beast of a blue shark on light gear comprising a 7ft 15 to 50g rod and Shimano Stella 4000 reel loaded with 20lb braid.

With a 200lb wire leader, a 150lb rubbing leader and a size 7/0 O’Shaughnessy hook baited with a mackerel head at the business end light tackle enthusiast Ben took some 15 to 20 minutes to beat the fish in open water.

The fish, estimated at 39 to 45lb, was - of course – safely returned.

A freshwater biologist by training I drifted into angling journalism and am now Farlows Group marketing manager. A hopelessly inadequate fly angler (the team are hoping to put that right.) I have fished all over the world and am now most at home fishing for River Test grayling, River Ebro catfish, Indian mahseer, or battling giant freshwater stingray on the Thai rivers. Away from my rod I do a bit of shooting and a lot of fruit and vegetable growing!
