The 2014 Farlows/Sportfish visit to the fabulous Atlantic Salmon Reserve kicked off in fine style with Andy A and Steve Hunt landing four salmon in the home pool within just an hour or two of arrival. Steve H also had the satisfaction of waving to the departing rods in the helicopter with one hand whilst playing a 14lb salmon with the other!!
The fishing was far from easy later in the week as temperatures soared to 30 degrees C but in spite of this fish continued to be caught. Despite these conditions, David K and John M (both recent converts to salmon fishing) both caught their very first salmon early in the week and subsequently went on to catch several more. The catches from the more experienced anglers in the group added to this gave a very respectable total of eighty five salmon for the week.
Personal bests where celebrated by many. These included a lovely 33lb cock fish caught in the Litza Tent Pool on a Frankin Snealda fly by Shaun W plus Steve Hunt’s 34lb hen fish caught on a micro willie gunn tube at the Rock Pool on Lower Kharlovka. Dave M’s had a memorable birthday landing a superb 23lb cock fish from the home pool on a Golden Tsar fly.
Paul S, Stephen C and Shaun W led the catches for the week with an impressive twenty-six fish tally for the week. Gordon R landed a 27lb’er from Dream Pool on a Bonia fly tied by ASR guide Sergey on the very last day when temperatures were up to the 30 degree high for the week ending his week on a real high.
Farlows buying manager Chris Ryan had a great day on Rock Pool landing six salmon on a tiny willie gunn that Chris found hidden in his fly box. Going against recent form he achieved all this without falling in!
Many decent sized tide-fresh salmon where hooked, landed and sometimes lost on a wide and eclectic mix of fly patterns. Almost every tactical variation of salmon fly was tried and many proved successful. The Barrels, Rock and Home pools on the Kharlova proved the most productive.
The ASR Guides where truly outstanding with their knowledge and endless hard work helped by the amazing pilot of the euro helicopter, landing on a sixpence and stirring up the fish when needed.
Camp manager Volodya and host Katya where exceptional in coordinating a superb service to all, a special mention must also go to the kitchen staff for a delicious cake for Dave M’s 65th birthday.
We all enjoyed the award ceremony on the final evening. A fitting end to a great week!
The week was sadly over in a flash with everyone enjoying some exceptional fishing. We were all really pleased to meet and personally thank ASR owner Vladimir Rybalchenko for an amazing weeks fishing on our departure to Murmansk.
Many thanks to everyone & hope to see you again next year!
